An antique cameo brooch at its best, is an art form of sculptural precision, which has become most collectable in recent years. The featured cameo, dated c1880 is an example of this fascinating type of work. It is set in a surround of black onyx, then encased in rose gold with a pin and safety chain attached.
This classical scene shows a winged maiden with two cherubs, possibly on a cloud, which could represent a piece of Antique Victorian mourning jewellery, due to the unusual mount which incorporates black onyx, which is a common symbol of Victorian mourning jewellery. It is 45mm long and 37mm wide. There is a very slight 'nick' on the back of the onyx, otherwise fabulous condition.
